Izzie
A little pug who left a big impact
We were driving in the car, with our dog big Sandy, and a new batch of baby guinea fowl that we just picked up from the farm supply store (We keep these for natural insect control around the farm.). All was calm, until driving down the dirt road, we saw a lump in the road, swerved avoid it and stepped on the brakes. Was that… a pug? We back up, and yes. That was a pug. She clearly had been running a long time, she was hyperventilating and had collapsed in the road. We were relieved to find out she had no other injuries, but one thing was clear, we couldn’t leave her. It also became clear that Sandy wasn’t going to allow a random dog in the car with us, so we had to have the door open, and hold Izzie out of the door and drive about five miles an hour all the way home! Thankfully, we weren’t very far. It wasn’t ideal, but after what felt like an eternity of Sandy growling, guinea keets peeping and us constantly struggling to keep Izzie out of Sandy’s sight, (and failing) we finally got her home. We instantly tried to get her as comfortable as possible, giving her treats, water, and bringing out the other pug we had at the time, Frank, to try to calm her down. The two instantly became friends. We then started the search for her owners online, and after a few hours, got a hold of them. They were really nice, and it was clear they cared for their dog very much. It turned out that they had just moved, and Izzie had escaped while they were visiting family, presumably trying to find her old home. The family had been searching for hours and beginning to lose hope, but were thrilled when they found out their beloved pet was safe. We returned her to her owners, and got to watch a joyful reunion. Even though we had her for less than 12 hours, Izzie and her story left an impression on all of us, and ignited our love for rescue.
